Hello Knitty -- on white

Boy, wish I'd thought of that name -- it's taken. But here's a link to a design project titled "hello knitty" -- also image #2  below.

Creatives all over the globe use indexhibita mySQL-driven CMS designed for personal portfolio sites.

The CMS has a devastatingly  simple design. If you want it to, the interface stays completely out of the way of the content. indexhibit.org was used as an example of "no style" style in More Eye Candy from the Underground by Curt Cloninger. It has a correspondingly simple back-end you can play with in the online demo.

Indexhibit is built by "Daniel EatockJeffery Vaska And You." It doesn't compete directly with Posterous, but seems like this CMS could work for almost anything that doesn't need a social media arsenal -- see the indexhibit Idea page.

There's just something so sexy about simplicity.

....and now “Ashes of Time Redux”

....and_now_Ashes_of_Time_Redu.zip (873 KB)

Ten years ago the Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai went to retrieve original negatives of one of his early films from a lab going bust. He was startled to find reels of that martial-arts film, "Ashes of Time," made only four years earlier, already disintegrating. It was a rueful coincidence for an auteur whose work ("In the Mood for Love," "Chungking Express" ) often mines the terrain of the ephemeral present, the disappearing past and the longing for what might have been.

Mr. Wong began hunting down prints of the film, some tucked away in vaults of far-flung Chinatown theaters abroad. "It was like looking for overseas orphans," he said. Then he spent five years restoring, reassembling, color-correcting and rescoring the film.

...in an act of aesthetic resurrection, he gathered together all the prints of "Ashes of Time" he and his team could find, shuffled and tweaked its scenes, underlined still-fuzzy relationships between characters, added some cello soul from Yo-Yo Ma , redesigned the credits and deepened the palette.

(on my wish list) Lynda Barrys Monkey paintings

Just found out there was a portfolio of Lynda Barrys amazing meditating monkey paintings in the Summer 2008  issue of the Buddhist magazine Tricycle. Missed it by weeks. Have to find out where to get a back issue.

She was selling the original paintings on eBay for $75 apiece but they seem to be gone now. I keep missing the monkeys...

The meditating monkey also appears with a cast of characters in her new book on writing: What It Is.
